How many games has your favorite football team lost when they started playing ‘Not to lose’ football? – How does that rhetorical question relate to our legislators at the state level and how does it relate to the Convention of States?
I don’t know how many times my team, or any football team, has lost once they went to their ‘play not to lose’ package. All I know is it’s happened a lot and I’m now disappointed every time I see them do that.
That is the same way it is with our state legislators. They do a good job until it gets close to election time, then they start to nothing at all in the hopes of not offending anyone so they get re-elected.
If they would just keep being who they are, keep playing aggressively to follow the football analogy, they would be more successful and would likely lure more to their way of operating.
Love him or hate him, Trump talks and does things and he doesn’t back down without a good objective or strategic reason. People either love that or hate that, there’s not much in between, and Trump doesn’t seem to care. It also seems to work as he seems to be more popular than not.
Other politicians should take heed be what they are. Republicans be conservative, Democrats be progressive, etc.
A similar message should be adopted by Convention of States volunteers. We shouldn’t pretend to be something we’re not just to push an agenda or keep from losing ground. I’m not suggesting we be pushy, bullying, or run up the score.
We are fighting for a Convention of States, for our country and for self-governance. We always need to be conscious of that and act like it.
