Constitutional literacy

According to many recent surveys and studies, a large majority of the country respect the Constitution and Bill of Rights, they know neither but they still believe they are not being used right.

Even though the Constitutional knowledge of the people of this nation is pathetic, they happen to be right about the government abusing the Constitution and our rights. It’s truly sad when over half of the people who live here can’t name the three branches of government, how laws are made, the two houses of Congress, or any number of things; and 95% cannot name more than one of the five rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

But don’t worry those elected to represent us are even more ignore of the Constitution than the general public. You often heard them say that they have to pass something so the courts can tell them if it’s constitutional, or that they never even consider the Constitution in anything they do. This is pathetic!

Not only is it pathetic that elected representatives of the people have such ignorance and disregard for the Constitution, it’s even worse that the people allow this and elect such individuals. But then elections are not about knowledge or capability of the person running for office; it’s about popularity, how well they can sling insults, who they know and how much money they can raise (from whatever source).

Can you imagine what our country would be like if those we elected knew the Constitution? Can you imagine what our once great nation would be like if, once again, the people knew the Constitution?

I am reminded of a TV episode I once saw when I think of the constitutional ignorance of the populace of the United States. In short there were two groups of people on this certain planet – the Yangs and the Coms. The Yangs had this holy document but the priests in charge of the document became illiterate, as did everyone else, both Yangs and Coms. This illiteracy lead to the document losing its meaning and becoming a mash up of distorted and mangled ‘holy’ words. The Coms ruled part of the world and did what Coms have always done; kill and oppress people.

In case you haven’t figured it out, the document is the Constitution, the Yangs were once Americans and the Coms are Communists.

There is an organization running FREE Constitution classes at the public library, in case anyone is interested in learning about their rights and such. Ignorant slave or informed free person, the choice is yours. Evening classes will become available as venues become available.

This was once taught in schools; not anymore. Not on a regular basis and definitely not on Constitution Day, as federal law dictates.
